Sphero Ollie RobotSphero Ollie, the app-enabled programmable robot, is engineered for speed. It can move at speeds up to 14 mph which is the fastest in this category, and run for one hour of play on a full three-hour USB charge. It connects to an iOS device using Bluetooth LE for a range of 30 meters (98 feet). It’s lots of fun to make Ollie perform some spectacular jumps, spins, tumbles and hairpin turns. Ollie is tough outside. Its polycarbonate shell protects its engine while the robot’s design repels water. Drive it down the stairs, through the dirt, or straight into a wall. The emphasis is on more extreme play, but it’s still programmable — you can create tricks and Ollie will track its own distance, airtime, color preferences, trick combos and more. The apps for Sphero will also work with Ollie, including Draw ‘N Drive, which follows routes, and Macro Lab, which teaches basic programming. Advanced users can even program in a version of BASIC. And the device itself is hackable.

This question is gotten asked all the time, “which one to choose, Sphero 2.0 or Ollie?”
sphero_vs_ollieCompared with the earlier Sphero balls, which offered a number of apps for varied game play, Ollie’s focus is on driving and doing tricks. Compared to Sphero 2.0, Ollie is much faster, performs more astonishing tricks and is a better option for outdoor use with the included nubby tires strapped to the wheels. And Ollie is less expensive. On the other hand, Sphero 2.0 is good for a ton of other things. Although Sphero is not nearly as fast as Ollie, Sphero is waterproof and pet proof and has more available apps including the apps for varied game play.
